Why Is VariFlute So Sensitive to MIDI Input?
VariFlute is powered by a physical modeling engine that continuously reacts to incoming control data, simulating the acoustic response of an aerophone in real time. This results in a system where even small variations in MIDI inputs, such as breath pressure, modulation, or velocity, can produce noticeable differences in tone, dynamics, or articulation. Each note is influenced not only by its own input data, but also by the residual state left by previous notes. As a result, users may perceive the instrument as highly responsive,or even overly sensitive.
This high level of responsiveness is intentional, designed to reflect the nuance and instability of acoustic wind instruments. However, users who prefer more predictable behavior can adjust reactivity and sensitivity in the Expressivity section, randomness elements in the Advanced - Instrument section, and adjust the responsiveness of a specific MIDI CC by acting on its curve in the Controller Mapping menus.
What may feel like instability is in fact a natural consequence of physical modeling. With appropriate configuration, VariFlute can accommodate both expressive solo playing and tightly controlled production contexts.
