What connectors do I need to connect vintage synths to a Mac or iPad?
To connect vintage synths to a Mac or iPad you’ll need:
- some 5din-to-USB interfaces, like the Roland UM-ONE mkII
- a USB hub: there are many on the market. We suggest NOT getting cheap ones. Also, make sure it’s powered.
Additionally, on iPad, you’ll need a Camera Connection Kit (CCK). Make sure the connector matches your iPad type. Newer iPads have a USB-C connector, older iPads have a Lightning connector.
If you have a recent macOS with USB-C connectors, you have two choices:
- a USB hub with a USB-C connector
- an additional USB-A to USB-C adapter
Here are the steps for successfully connecting your vintage synths:
- Connect the 5din connector of the 5din-to-USB interface to your vintage synth.
- Connect the USB connector of the 5din-to-USB interface to the USB hub.
- Connect the USB hub to the CCK on iPad or to the Mac (eventually through an adapter).
