Why can't I quickly scroll through and preview presets in PolySWAM like in other libraries or synths?

Many users accustomed to traditional sample libraries or software synthesizers wonder if it is possible to scroll through the preset list extremely fast, perhaps previewing sounds on the fly.

The interface and workflow of PolySWAM’s Preset Browser have been designed significantly differently for precise technical and philosophical reasons related to how our physical modeling engine works:

1. A PolySWAM preset is equivalent to dozens of traditional patches

Unlike a static sample-based library, where hundreds of separate presets are often needed to manage individual articulations (staccato, legato, crescendos, etc.), a single preset in PolySWAM is a living, complete instrument.

All articulations, dynamics, and infinite expressive nuances are not "chosen" from a list of pre-recorded files. Instead, they are generated in real time under your fingertips based on how you play (attack velocity, note overlapping, pressure, and continuous controllers). Skipping through a preset in a few seconds would prevent you from understanding its true potential: a PolySWAM preset must be loaded, explored, and literally "tested" on the keyboard.

2. Integrated "Scenes"

When you load a preset, you are not simply loading a single timbre, but an entire virtual orchestral ensemble. Each preset contains several built-in Scenes, which allow you to instantly vary the physical placement of the musicians in the virtual room, the equalization, the reverbs, and the mixer balance. The Preset Browser remains open specifically to let you analyze and select the most suitable acoustic Scene for your arrangement before returning to the main screen.

3. Engine instantiation and loading times

On a technical level, selecting a preset in PolySWAM means simultaneously activating up to 30 or 40 independent, real-time SWAM synthesis engines. This process requires a brief fraction of time to properly initialize the MIDI architecture and the physical parameters of each simulated acoustic instrument. If the navigation experience emulated that of a common ultra-fast scrolling browser, the system would experience continuous overloads due to a rapid barrage of simultaneous instantiations and de-instantiations.

4. Detailed information display

The Preset Browser is structured to be a true information hub. It displays detailed data about the ensemble configuration, the available Scenes, and includes an in-depth textual description of the preset's characteristics. The browser does not close automatically after a single click precisely to allow the musician to read and evaluate this information without visual interruptions.

Practical tip and shortcut: To speed up navigation without having to manually press the "Load" button every time, you can confirm and immediately start loading the selected ensemble by simply double-clicking on the preset name.
